You can count on us!

There’s no doubt about it, Ballroom and Latin dancing is changing the way people feel about exercise, and themselves! For those skeptics who don’t believe in the power of the mind in health and medicine, We have listed the physical proof first. Millions of people every year are enjoying the many benefits that these forms of dance provide. From physical, mental and social standpoints, our favorite recreation is one of the best overall forms of low impact/high aerobic workouts available. It’s fun, it can be free, and best of all it’s always done with someone else! Here are just a few of the many benefits Ballroom offers:

BENIFITS OF DANCE

The Physical Benefits

Cardiovascular: Ballroom and Latin dancing (henceforth called B&L) can raise the heart rate anywhere from 80 to 120 (more for some of us) beats per minute. That is the equivalent of any strength training or aerobic program I have heard of. Sustained in 2 minute bursts over a 45 minute period will build not only your heart’s strength, but it’s endurance too (Like Viagra for the Heart).

Muscle Tone: B&L dancing, when danced at an intermediate to advanced level of technique, use the perfect blend of isometric and isotonic resistance (the two key ingredients to muscle building and toning). The blend and use of the muscles is perfect for building beautiful tone in the muscles without building a lot of muscle mass (a big concern for women).

Joints: According to the American Journal of Medicine, the best way to avoid arthritis, early arthritis and to remedy current joint discomfort is to continue to use the joints in a controlled manner. The beautiful rise and fall of Waltz demonstrates this beautifully. What could do this more perfectly and gracefully than Ballroom and Latin Dancing?

The Spinal Column: The frame or posture maintained places the spine in a natural and correct position, even more correct than when standing or sitting naturally! Plus that puts all your organs in alignment, which is now thought by many doctors and chiropractors to fight sickness, disease, fatigue and more.

>Respiratory: Many track greats know that a strong set of lungs gets plenty of oxygen, which makes the heart work easier, which in turn allows us to dance and have fun longer! That’s why sprinters run a lot of “wind” bursts. Brief bursts to up the heart-rate quickly, then bringing it down and doing this repeatedly. This is similar to dancing at a party, club or ballroom.

Facial Lines: Most ballroom and Latin dancers are so busy smiling all the time that they won’t get those nasty worry lines. (OK, that’s reaching a little but that’s my story and I’m sticking’ to it).

Mental and Emotional Benefits

Hug Theory: The dance position used in Ballroom and Latin Dancing is very similar to a hug. It is believed that this is part of the attraction of B&L dancing, you get the security of a hug without the need for intimacy. Hugs are truly therapeutic and the ballroom circle does a lot of hugging as well as their dance positions, that’s a whole lotta hugging going on!

Self-Esteem: The first time I took my partner in an underarm turn, she almost broke my hand she squeezed so tight, “someone might notice me” was her explanation. She went on to a nat’l championship, then became a teacher then a performer. Almost everyone we know who does B&L, has found a deeper self worth and holds a greater value in themselves..

Confidence: Many ballroom dancers have experienced the thrill (rush) of dancing in front of people. This is one of American’s top 10 fears! Overcoming this fear increases confidence in dance, in one’s self and in life.

Social Ease: There is documentation out the wazoo supporting the theory that “comfort and ease in social situations” is one of the four primary needs in all individuals (almost every philosophy, psychology and self help book has the list). From weekly exposure (and a bit of trial and error), people become much more at ease in a social situation. They learn to engage in conversation, proper social etiquette (one of the biggest social “phobias”.) to ask someone to dance (a big first step for many people). It even helps people deal with crowds. All in all the ultimate source for social edification and eventually comfort.

Posture, Appearance and Balance: We have grouped these since they build upon each other. B&L gives better posture, which in turn gives one a much more attractive appearance. If your ego from looking so good doesn’t throw you of, the improved posture improves balance as well. This in turn will help one to move more gracefully, which is explained in the next benefit.

Grace and Poise: Through improved balance and self esteem, one tends to stand and move in a much more polished and pleasant manner. Clumsiness is overcome, which also increases confidence and social ease.

Psychological Escape: No matter what you do in life, you’ve got to take a break sometime! Ballroom provides a temporary escape from the cares of the world and their pressures and for a few hours a week gives them freedom and enjoyment, invigorating them for their normal responsibilities.

Emotional Lifeline: For many people, there is an emptiness, a loneliness, something missing in their life. Ballroom offers something wonderful to fill that void and offers so many great benefits to boot!

SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE SOCIAL DANCES WE OFFER INSTRUCTION
(CLASSES/ PRIVATE LESSONS)

Here is some quick information about the social & competitive dances we teach:

Argentine Tango.

Argentine Tango is a style of  music and dance originated in the streets and salons of Buenos Aires and is characterized by its passionate hold and complex leg and foot movements. It is very popular around the world due to the deeper connection and communication between partners  creating great freedom of music interpretation.

Bolero.

Bolero is a slow Latin dance which originated as one of two forms of Rumba (Bolero Rumba and Son Rumba), and still shares many of the same figures. Bolero differs from Rumba in its tempo and style of music and movement.

Cha Cha.

Cha-Cha is an exciting, syncopated Latin dance which originated in the 1950’s as a slowed-down Mambo. The Cha Cha gets its name and character from its distinct repetitive foot rhythm, 1-2-3 step-step which is similar to Swing.

East Coast Swing.

This Swing form is also called American Swing, or Triple Step Swing due to the rhythm of the basic triple step, this dance consists of six and eight count patterns. It is a circular dance that is danced with a bounce and is very grounded and not high in the legs. This bounce requires the dancer to stay very smooth and not jump around much. East Coast Swing, derived from Lindy Hop and Jitterbug, is the base for all swing dances.

Foxtrot.

Foxtrot is a smooth dance introduced to the public in 1913 by Harry Fox, noted for being the first dance to incorporate into the rhythm a combination of Slows and Quicks. Foxtrot is characterized by smooth, walkingstyle movements, but can be adapted to fit a variety of musical tempi and style, or to fit onto small, crowded nightclub dance floors.

Hustle.

Hustle is often associated with retro disco music, the hustle is the perfect dance for dance-beat, nightclub music including everything from pop to rap and hip hop.

Jive.

Jive is the European version of the East Coast Swing, this dance uses six and eight count patterns. However, it is danced quite bouncy with very sharp foot kicks and “flicks,” to faster tempo swing music and is meant for competitive style dancing.

Mambo.

Mambo is a fast Latin dance, similar to Salsa, which comes from Cuba. Mambo was brought to America in the 1940’s and 50’s and eventually adapted as an American style ballroom dance. Most of the movements emphasize the second beat in the measure, suggestive of the Clave rhythm which is fundamental to Mambo music.

Merengue.

Merengue is an energetic Latin-style march which originated in the Dominican Republic, which emphasizes a straight-ahead 8-count rhythm taken with Cuban Motion. Merengue is now also a subset of the modern club-style Salsa dances.

Night-Club Two Step.

Night-Club Two Step is an easy-going social dance, similar in movement to the Bossa Nova, first introduced in the 80’s by Buddy Schwimmer and popular amongst the West Coast Swing crowd. Nightclub 2-Step is normally danced to medium-tempo pop songs and ballads, using combinations of Slow-Quick-Quick and Quick-Quick-Slow rhythms.

Paso Doble.

Paso Doble is a dramatic French-Spanish Flamenco-style march danced in 2/4 time, with man portraying the matador in a bullfight, the lady as his cape. The character of the dance is arrogant and passionate.

Peabody.

Peabody is a dance developed in the United States around 1920, which was created as a fast version of the Foxtrot characterized by rapid progression and frequent use of Right Outside Position and locking actions.

Quickstep.

Quickstep dance began as a quick version of Foxtrot mixed with the Charleston, and musical “Jazz” influences. It is characterized by fast movement, often including a variety of hops, kicks, skips, lock steps and chassés.

Rumba.

Rumba is a Latin dance characterized by Cuban motion done to romantic Latin songs and music, the Rumba is a slow, sensuous, romantic dance which spotlights the lady and features much flirtation.

Salsa.

Salsa is a hot Latin dance similar to Mambo, which, when danced correctly, displays a lot of shaking, shimmying, and hip action.

Samba.

Samba is the official dance of Brazil. In America and Europe is characterized by “bounce” action, it is an energised dance form, that travels around the floor with lot’s of rhythm and hip actions danced to fast music in 2/4 time signature.

In Brazil the Samba is dances in many different styles, the most popular…the “Samba de Gafiera” (originally from Rio de Janeiro) has the sultriness of salsa, the sharpness of tango and the elegance and sophistication of ballroom.

Tango

Tango.  Tango is a progressive dance that moves along the line of dance, it is characterized by staccato movements of the feet and flexed knees, and stylized poses that highlight its dramatic style. It was  created in Europe based on the Argentine Tango.

Viennese Waltz.

Viennese Waltz is a fast ballroom dance in 3/4 or 6/8 meter, often associated with the music of Johann Strauss.

Waltz.

Waltz The oldest and best known of all the Ballroom dances, Waltz is a progressive dance using rise and fall and danced to 3/4 Time music. Slow Waltz evolved from the fast paced Viennese Waltz. .

West Coast Swing.

West Coast Swing is a slotted swing dance in 4/4 time, characterized by its smooth and linear style.

OUR DIFFERENTIAL

We have a unique teaching method. Our instructors have an amazing capacity of breaking down patterns in very simple components that anybody can do. This way the hardest pattern will be very easy to learn.
We have a very experience staff. They are highly trained, certified and prepared to teach figures, lead/follow, tempo, poise, expression and train you with other dance fundamentals that will really help you go beyond the dance patterns you will learn.
Our instructors have great personalities and are great dancers. Just to remind you are going to have a great time.

PRICES

Private lessons and Group classes have different values and that is why they have different prices. Private lessons are apparently more expensive than groups but you pay for what you get. Sooner and better in any kind of service is more expensive. By other side a bad habit is easy to be developed in a group class and will be there until you realize something is wrong but then to fix the problem it will be a lot of work and the final price for you to pay will be more expensive.
You can take privates individually or as a couple for the same price (individually is more effective). Three or more people are considered a semi-private group and price varies a little.
The prices of private lessons may vary according to your program, the amount of lessons, level and the location. So please fill out the following form and we will return back to you with some prices and ideas. We do have specials!! For absolute beginners.

If you heard of any other school besides ours, before you make your decision, look for the reviews of the school online and see what others are saying about it. You will find that our school have the best reputation and the rigth prices. If you are not ready to make this investment, or you are not sure of the value of a private lesson, call us for a consultation to see the best way for you to learn (click here for more information), or simply try our group classes ($15 or less each).

You can get your Gift Certificate(s) at Forever Dancing Ballroom
(5818-B Seminary Rd, Falls Church, VA 22041) or we can e-mail you the Gift Certificate for you to print and present at studio when you are ready to redeem.

THE BEST WAY TO LEARN

Private Lesson is the best way to learn because:

  1. Your instructor will design a dance program based in your needs and goals. So you will make a plan with your instructor to learn the dance(s) that you pick up to a certain level based in your skills, your level of improvement during and in between lessons. Instructor will work in your program as you use your lessons updating, following up and re planning. This way you know what you are buying and when you are accomplishing.

  2. Its personal. The instructor is there just for you to teach, correct, evaluate, motivate, train, direct, choreograph and first of all, make sure you are reaching your goals.

  3. Corrections are immediate. Finding if your timing is correct, if you are using the proper technique, if you are leading/following properly and if you are looking good as you executing the pattern, for example, are very difficult in a group situation. And to find why something is not working right is almost impossible. Often couples in a group situation blame on each other because they can not tell what is going on.
Here are some consequences of the most common uncorrected dance problems:
Bad posture = back pain, Bad leader/follower = no dance partner, Bad Tempo = no fun to dance with, Bad balance = Limited the dancer that cannot execute advanced movements.

  4. Corrections are immediate because you will know when and why you are doing right or wrong.

  5. We have a teaching method. Our instructors have an amazing capacity of breaking down patterns in very simple components that anyone can do. This way they will make the hardest pattern very easy to learn.

  6. We have an experience staff. They are highly prepared to teach lead/follow, tempo, poise, expression and train you with other dance fundamentals that will really help you go beyond the dance patterns you learn.

  7. Instructor are fun to be with. Just to remind you are going to have a great time.

BACHATA I – Beginner & Up
“Club Style Basics”
7:30PM – 8:15PM

This course is designed for students with little or no Bachata/Merengue dance experience. This class will teach basic fundamentals of timing, rhythm, footwork and an introduction to partner dancing helping you build a SOLID Merengue/Bachata foundation. Our goal will be to raise your awareness of timing, technique & basic body movements so you can dance the night away in no time.

What is Bachata?

Originated from the Dominican Republic where the music was also born. The original, slow style in the ’60s was danced only in closed position, like the bolero, often in close embrace. The bachata basic steps is done by moving within a small square (side, side, forward and side, side, back) and is inspired from the bolero step but evolved to including a tap and also syncopation (steps in between the beats) depending on the dynamics of the music being played. The hand placement can vary according to the position of the dances, which can range from very close to open to completely open.

It is increasingly danced to faster music, adding more footwork, simple turns and rhythmic free-styling and with alternation between close (romantic) and open position. Authentic bachata is danced with soft hip movements and a tap or syncopation (1, 2, 3, tap/syncopation). It can also be danced with or without bouncing (moving the body up on the beats and down again in between the beats by adding slight spring to ones legs). Authentic bachata was created by Dominican social dancers over the course of decades (starting around the beginning of the 1960s) and is still evolving to this day.

In 2005 it’s popularity in the latin clubs start to bring other influences to it such as salsa, tango, zouk-lambada (Brazilian zouk), ballroom etc. If you go to a Salsa club, it is a must know how -to-dance. 30 to 50% of the music will be Bachata.

What is Merengue?

Originally from the Dominican Republic. Partners hold each other in a closed position. The leader holds the follower’s waist with the leader’s right hand, while holding the follower’s right hand with the leader’s left hand at the follower’s eye level. Partners bend their knees slightly left and right, thus making the hips move left and right. The hips of the leader and follower move in the same direction throughout the song. Partners may walk sideways or circle each other, in small steps. They can switch to an open position and do separate turns without letting go each other’s hands or releasing one hand. During these turns they may twist and tie their handhold into intricate pretzels. Other choreographies are possible. It is one of the easiest Latin dances to learn due to the steady timing of its figures.

I have always want to learn to dance. This school made a miracle. It completely transformed my two left feet and no rhythm into a dancer. Now I feel comfortable and confident to step onto any dance floor. I am still taking dance lessons, and considering to be a contestant in a dance competition. 😮

HOW DO THE DANCE CLASSES WORK?

Most of the dance classes are organized in a progressive series of 8 dance lessons covering one chapter of the level pertinent to the class. Every week the dance instructor will review the previous lesson and add more dance figures, technique, & practice about the same subject. On week 4 the topic within the same chapter will change slightly, giving new students the opportunity to join the class. Students may choose to continue studying the same dance in the next series with a new subject/chapter or move on to the next level.

In the carousel above you will find Forever Dancing Group Classes Menu for you to choose, simply click on the class of your preference, you will find links to registration there. If you are not sure what you need click here!

The instructors will recommend partners rotation throughout the class so that everyone gets more experience dancing with different people. If you would rather not switch partners, please contact the instructors beforehand.

Drop-ins on the first 2 weeks only, or with instructor permission. For completion of each level and, or, fully understanding of the material, each level is recommended to be taken several times.

Still not sure what you need? Contact us! By E-mail (click here!) or call (Studio) 703-824-3555.
Online  registrations will be accepted on the first two nights of any series on a space-available basis.

MINIMUM ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENT:

Each group class requires a minimum of four (4) enrolled participants to create an optimal learning environment. This ensures that every student receives the necessary attention and interaction for their progress. Forever Dancing reserves the right to cancel a group class if the minimum enrollment requirement isn’t met. In such cases, enrolled participants will receive prior notification, and alternative arrangements or refunds will be made according to our refund policy.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I MISSED A CLASS? CAN I DO A MAKE-UP CLASS?

YES! We have a Makeup procedure that allows you to:

1) Make up any class you miss by attending any other group class in the Calendar that is still open and is your dance level.
2) You can even do the Makeup in anticipation of missing class, and not just afterwards.
3) No prior authorization is required. Just let the front desk know that you are doing a make-up lesson for missed lesson within the timeframe of the session that you register for before going in to class.

IMPORTANT NOTE: All Makeups must be made within the same session (e.g. 4 or 8 week series) and cannot roll over to future sessions under any circumstances.

I CAN’T COME TO CLASS ANYMORE. CAN I GET A REFUND?

In line with the vast majority of dance studios in the U.S., our classes are non-refundable. Also, missed classes cannot be rolled over to future sessions.

However, please remember that you’re always allowed to Make Up classes you missed, or anticipate to miss, by attending any other group class of your choice in the calendar within the same session time frame.

WHAT TO WEAR

You should wear dance-compatible shoes to class: something that will stay on your foot, and something that pivots easily: thin leather soles are ideal for this. No black, rubbery soles. If you have a pair of dance shoes, wear them, but they are not necessary.

ARE STREET SHOES ALLOWED IN BALLROOM FLOOR?

IMPORTANT NOTE: Our classrooms have professional dance sprung floors layered with wood floor surface. To maintain the quality of our dance floors, NO STREET SHOES ARE ALLOWED INSIDE THE BALLROOM DANCE FLOOR.

If you arrive to the studio with muddy or dusty shoes, it’s your responsibility to clean them before entering the dance studio, or you will not be allowed to enter the ballroom or join the class. Ideally, you should dedicate a pair of shoes to your dance activities and ensure they’re clean and free of debris.

Forever Dancing Ballroom goal is to ensure that every person gets to dance in a clean and respectful environment, so please be mindful of your responsibilities towards your fellow dance enthusiasts, and expect the same from them.

Wedding Dance Lessons

THE WEDDING FIRST DANCE

The Wedding First Dance of a bride and groom is a popular element at many wedding celebrations in modern European and American traditions.
It is called “The First dance”, because they are intended to open the dance for all guests, and it is also the first dance of the bride and groom as new husband and new wife.

In the past, the first wedding dance was commonly a waltz. Today more popular wedding dances include the foxtrot, merengue, salsa, tango, rumba, swing and more, depending on their culture and their goal for this fist dance. However, most couples still prefer to perform a popular, nice and romantic “slow dance”.

Traditionally, shortly after the dance begins, guests would promptly join in the dancing, in order of precedence, exactly like at any other ball. Often the newly married couple will dance a second dance with their parents or new in-laws concluding the opening of the ball.
